Fall is the busiest season for family photos—and for good reason. The colors are stunning, the light is golden, and cozy sweaters make everything feel timeless. But if you’ve lived here long, you know Minnesota fall weather has a mind of its own. One day it’s crisp and sunny, the next day it’s drizzly or windy. Families often ask me, “What happens if it rains?” The short answer: you don’t have to worry. I’ve photographed in just about every condition, and there’s always a plan to make your session beautiful.
Myth-Busting: Bad Weather Doesn’t Always Mean Bad Photos
Not all “bad” weather is actually bad for photography. In fact, some of my favorite sessions happened in less-than-perfect conditions.
Overcast = Soft Light. Cloudy skies act like a natural diffuser. No harsh shadows, no squinting—just even, flattering light that looks incredible in fall colors.
Light Drizzle Can Be Magical. If you’re up for it, a sprinkle of rain can create some of the most romantic, cozy photos. Think umbrellas, close cuddles, and moody autumn tones. It’s less mess and more story.
Wind Adds Movement. Flowing hair, swirling leaves, and even a twirl of a scarf can make photos feel alive. While we avoid extreme gusts, a little breeze often adds drama in the best way.
The Backup Plan: How It Works
As your photographer, I keep a close eye on the forecast starting 48–72 hours before your session. I check multiple weather sources and look at more than just “rain or shine.” Temperature, wind speed, and timing all matter. I’ll always reach out 24–48 hours ahead if it looks questionable.
If conditions are mild, we may pivot to a new location that’s less exposed to the elements. If the weather truly doesn’t cooperate, I offer flexible rescheduling so you’re not left stressed or disappointed. And if you’d rather not wait, we can move the session into the studio, where it’s warm, cozy, and free from weather surprises.
Indoor Fall Sessions Still Feel Like Fall
Moving indoors doesn’t mean losing the fall vibe. Studio sessions can still feel seasonal with soft textures, warm tones, and cozy blankets. Instead of worrying about mud, wind, or cold, you can simply relax into the moment. Indoor sessions are especially wonderful for young kids, newborns, or grandparents who might not be as comfortable outside. The focus shifts even more to connection, cuddles, and storytelling, which makes for timeless photos.
My Commitment to Clients
I will never force a session in unsafe or miserable conditions. Rain, snow, or heavy winds don’t mean your photos are ruined—they just mean we adjust. You’ll always get clear communication, flexible options, and support in choosing what feels best for your family. After 20+ years photographing Minnesota families, I’ve navigated plenty of unpredictable days. You can trust that I’ve got a plan.
How Families Can Prepare
A little preparation makes reschedules or weather pivots less stressful. Stay flexible on timing—cloudy afternoon light can be just as beautiful as golden hour. Sometimes a weekday reschedule is easier than a busy weekend. When planning outfits, think layers. Neutral cardigans, stylish outerwear, and cozy scarves not only keep you warm but also look great on camera. Have backup shoes for walking on damp grass and don’t forget lip balm or hand warmers for cooler evenings.

Last October, I photographed a family at Como Park on a day that started cloudy and chilly. Instead of bright sun, we had soft overcast skies—and the results were stunning. The colors of the trees were more saturated, the kids weren’t squinting, and the entire gallery had a calm, timeless feel. What could have felt like a “bad weather day” actually turned into one of my favorite fall sessions.
