If you’ve ever scrolled past a post about “fall mini sessions” and thought, Can you really get good photos in just 20 minutes? — you’re not alone.
It’s one of the most common questions I hear. And honestly? I get it. We live in a world that moves fast, and something as meaningful as family photos should never feel rushed.
But here’s the truth: mini sessions can be incredibly meaningful — if they’re thoughtfully designed and guided with care. And that’s exactly what I do.
I’ve been photographing families in St. Paul and beyond for over 25 years. I know how to gently guide people into natural, connected moments — and yes, I can do that in 20 minutes. With a warm, calm approach and a detailed plan behind the scenes, a mini session can feel relaxed, joyful, and absolutely real.
Let’s break it down.
What Actually Happens in a 20-Minute Session?
My mini sessions are carefully timed to make the most of every moment — while still allowing you to breathe, laugh, and settle into the experience.
Here’s a peek behind the curtain:
1–2 minutes: Greeting and settling in
We meet at the location, check for any last-minute wardrobe fixes, and let the kids (and parents) warm up for a moment.
3–15 minutes: Guided poses + candid moments
I guide you through a mix of gently posed and natural shots. Think walking together, cuddling, giggling, twirling, holding hands, and connection-centered direction that doesn’t feel stiff or awkward.
15–20 minutes: Final moments + wrap-up
This is when the magic usually happens. Everyone has loosened up, the light is just right, and I sneak in a few last moments that often become the favorite frame.
What You Can Expect to Receive
After your session, I carefully review and edit your best images with my signature style. You can typically expect:
-
8 to 15 final images in an online gallery (depending on the collection you chose)
-
A blend of candid and gently posed shots
-
Full-resolution downloads + print options
-
A timeless visual story you can enjoy for years to come
And no — you don’t have to choose your images in a rush. You’ll get time to look through your gallery, select your favorites, and place any print or upgrade orders at your own pace.
Who Mini Sessions Are Perfect For
Mini sessions aren’t for every situation. But for the right families and the right reasons, they’re truly wonderful.
Here’s who they’re best for:
-
Families with young kids who may not last through a full session
-
Clients who want seasonal or themed photos (fall foliage, winter holidays, etc.)
-
Returning clients who want to update their portraits regularly
-
Budget-conscious families who still want professional-quality work
-
Busy folks who can only spare a short window in their schedule
They’re also ideal for maternity photos, couples’ portraits, and even first-birthday milestone sessions — anything that can be beautifully captured in a tight, focused timeframe.
And Who Might Want a Full Session Instead
If you’re hoping for a more relaxed pace, outfit changes, extended family members, or a greater variety of poses and settings, a full session is probably a better fit. Full sessions offer:
-
More time for breaks and transitions
-
The ability to move to multiple locations
-
Longer storytelling and variety
-
A deeper emotional arc in your gallery
There’s no “better” option — just what works best for your goals.
Not sure which is right for you? Just reach out. I’m always happy to talk it through with zero pressure.
How to Get the Most from Your Mini Session
Here are some tips to make sure your 20 minutes shine:
Prep Like It’s a Full Session
Even though it’s shorter, everything else stays the same — plan your outfits carefully, make sure little ones are rested and fed, and arrive 10–15 minutes early so you’re not flustered.

Let Go of Perfection
Mini sessions move quickly, and the best thing you can do is lean into connection over perfection. Snuggles, giggles, wind-blown hair — they’re all part of the story.
Trust the Process
I’ve designed these sessions to feel smooth, supportive, and never rushed. Even if your toddler throws sand or your dog won’t sit still — we’ll roll with it and still get beautiful images.
What Makes My Mini Sessions Different?
I don’t run mini sessions as an assembly line. Each one is:
-
Thoughtfully spaced with buffer time (so no one feels rushed)
-
Located in spots I’ve personally scouted for great light + beautiful backdrops
-
Guided with gentle posing + natural prompts that bring out real connection
-
Edited with the same care and polish I give full-length galleries
Plus, I include a cozy welcome guide with everything you need to feel confident and prepared.
And yes — every client walks away with images that feel like them. Honest, warm, timeless.
