Behind the Scenes: Designing This Year’s Fall Mini Setup
A family of four walks through a grassy field with autumn trees in the background, all wearing light-colored tops and tan pants.

Fall in Minnesota Isn’t Just a Season—It’s a Whole Mood

There’s something about autumn in Minnesota that calls for being captured. The crunch of leaves, the warm, low sunlight, the cozy layers… it’s a season that practically begs to be photographed. And for families looking to hold onto those moments, fall mini sessions have become a favorite tradition.

This year’s mini sessions are more than a quick stop in front of the lens — they’re a full experience, carefully designed with intention, comfort, and connection in mind. In this behind-the-scenes look, I’ll walk you through how I build the full experience from scratch. Because when you’re trusting me with your family’s memories, I want you to know just how much thought goes into every detail.

Location First: Longfellow Gardens for That Tree-Lined Magic

Every great session starts with the right setting. For 2025, I chose Longfellow Gardens as the anchor point for our fall minis. It’s not just beautiful — it’s reliably beautiful. Year after year, the trees here hit peak color around mid-October. The mix of golden maples, rustic stonework, and that tucked-away, quiet vibe makes it a dream for fall portraits.

But this decision wasn’t just about aesthetics. I also considered:

  • Sun positioning for the best late afternoon glow

  • Parking and stroller access for busy families

  • Backdrop consistency so every client gets a cohesive, frame-worthy look

I scout locations throughout the summer and return in early fall to note changes in foliage and crowd patterns. The goal: make sure your session feels effortless, even if the wind is blowing or the toddlers are extra wiggly that day.

Theme Concept: Natural, Classic, and Timeless

The aesthetic this year is “Beneath the October Trees.” It’s grounded in nature, full of movement, and designed to feel relaxed and candid. I wanted the setup to highlight what’s already magical about fall — without over-decorating or forcing too much into a short session window.

Rather than elaborate props or artificial backdrops, I’m keeping it organic: textured blankets, simple wooden crates for sitting or posing, and soft earth-toned layers to accent the landscape, not compete with it.

Why not a big prop scene? Because:

  • Your kids’ expressions are more important than a fake pumpkin patch.

  • I want your photos to age well — not look dated in two years.

  • The scenery itself is the story: the way your child plays with the leaves, the way your partner pulls you into a warm hug under golden trees.

Prep and Set Design: Keeping It Simple, Cozy, and Efficient

Sessions are just 20 minutes, so I design the space to be ready-to-go and adaptable to different family sizes and personalities. Here’s what goes into the prep:

  • Test shots with real lighting the week before, so I know exactly where and when to shoot.

  • Natural seating options like blankets, crates, or standing poses with movement.

  • Weather backups with rain dates (always!) and an indoor cozy corner if needed.

One thing I always think about: what will this setup feel like to a child? To a parent juggling snacks and baby wipes? I want it to be smooth, fun, and inviting. That means no stress, no standing in long lines, and no complicated instructions.

Clothing Compatibility: Set Design That Works With Every Palette

The textures and tones I’m using — soft gold, creamy white, and deep rust — are purposefully chosen to complement a wide range of wardrobe choices. Whether you show up in neutrals or jewel tones, the scene will enhance your outfits, not clash with them.

Need help choosing your look? I’ve created a full What to Wear for Fall Minis guide [← insert internal link here] with suggestions based on the location, temperature, and session type. You can also text me photos of outfit ideas — I’m happy to give quick feedback before your session.

Client Experience: It’s More Than Just the Photos

What clients often tell me is that fall minis become more than just a photo op. It’s a moment to slow down, snuggle up, and be present together. That’s why every detail — from the time of day to the welcome email — is built to support that ease.

You’ll get:

  • A prep guide sent in advance

  • A reminder email the week of

  • A smooth, easy experience on-site

  • A curated gallery delivered within 2 weeks

  • The chance to order professional prints or holiday cards, right from your gallery

Mini sessions are a snapshot, yes. But they’re also a way to feel something together — and that’s what I design for.

Want to Book a Spot?

Spots for the October 12 and 19 sessions are filling fast, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. I only shoot a limited number per day to ensure every client gets my full attention and the light stays just right.

If you’ve been meaning to book family photos but don’t want a full hour-long session, this is your chance. A little time, a lot of warmth, and memories that will last long after the leaves have fallen.
