If I had a dollar for every message I’ve received that started with “I just had my baby — do you have any availability this week?” I’d have enough to fund a very long Minnesota winter.
I understand why it happens. Pregnancy is busy. The newborn stage feels far away when you’re in the middle of the second trimester. And in the chaos of preparing a nursery, attending appointments, figuring out parental leave, and growing an entire human being, booking a photographer doesn’t always feel urgent.
Until the baby is here. And then it’s very urgent.
So let me answer the question directly, without hedging: the best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester — ideally between 20 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Here’s why that timing matters, and what happens when you wait.
Why the Second Trimester Is the Sweet Spot for Booking
The Newborn Window Is Smaller Than You Think
The ideal window for newborn photography — when babies are still in that deeply sleepy, naturally curled state that makes the most classic newborn images possible — is approximately 5 to 14 days of life.
Fourteen days. That’s the window.
After two weeks, babies become more alert, their reflexes are more active, and they’re harder to settle into the peaceful sleeping poses that define newborn photography. Sessions are still possible after 14 days, but the style of images shifts significantly.
When you book during the second trimester, your photographer has your due date and can hold a tentative session date in that window — usually around days 7 to 10 of life. When your baby arrives, you simply confirm the date. There’s no scrambling.
Quality Photographers Book Up — Sometimes Months in Advance
Newborn photographers who have built a reputation take a limited number of sessions per month. This is intentional. Newborn sessions are long, physically and emotionally demanding, and require the kind of focused attention that you simply can’t give to an unlimited number of families.
For established photographers in the Twin Cities and Saint Paul area, it’s common for availability to fill 2 to 4 months in advance — sometimes more for due dates that fall in particularly popular seasons like late spring and fall.
If you wait until your third trimester to start looking, you may find that the photographers you love are already fully booked for your due date window. That’s a frustrating position to be in when you’re 36 weeks pregnant and running out of time.
Booking in the second trimester means you have access to the full calendar and the best selection of available dates.
The Postpartum Period Is Not the Time to Be Making Decisions
I say this with genuine empathy, not judgment.
The first days and weeks after a baby is born are not a time when most people are in a strong position to research, evaluate, and book a professional service they’ve never used before.
You’re running on minimal sleep. Your hormones are shifting in dramatic ways. You’re learning an entirely new set of skills in real time. The cognitive load is enormous.
Decisions that would take 20 minutes in your normal life can feel overwhelming in that state.
Booking your newborn photographer before your baby arrives removes one decision entirely from those early days. It is genuinely one of the simplest gifts you can give yourself.
What the Booking Process Looks Like When You Plan Ahead
Here’s exactly what the process looks like when you book during your second trimester.
You reach out to me — by email, through the contact form on my website, or however is easiest for you — and let me know your due date and a little about what you’re hoping for.
We have a brief consultation conversation. I answer your questions, explain what the session includes, and we look at availability around your due date.
I hold a tentative session date in your newborn window — usually somewhere between days 7 and 12 of life, based on your due date.
You go about your pregnancy knowing your newborn session is handled.
When your baby is born, you send me a message — a text, an email, whatever — and we confirm the exact date based on when your baby actually arrived. If your baby comes early or late, we adjust. That flexibility is built into the process.
That’s it. The whole thing takes one conversation and a brief message when the baby arrives.
Compare that to trying to do all of that research and decision-making on day three postpartum, and the value of planning ahead becomes very clear.
What If You’re Already in Your Third Trimester?
First: don’t panic. You haven’t necessarily missed your chance.
Many photographers, including myself, do hold some availability for later bookings. If you’re in your third trimester and you’re reading this feeling a mild sense of urgency — that feeling is useful. Use it to reach out now rather than after your baby is born.
What you want to avoid is waiting until your baby is already here to start looking. At that point, you’re trying to find availability in the next 5 to 10 days, which is genuinely difficult with most established photographers.
If you’re 32, 34, or even 37 weeks — reach out today. There may still be availability. But the sooner you contact a photographer, the better your options.
What If You’re Earlier Than You Think You Need to Be?
Some clients reach out at 16 or 18 weeks and feel like they’re being overly organized. They almost apologize for it.
Please don’t.
Early is great. Early means you have choices. Early means the consultation is relaxed and unhurried. Early means you have plenty of time to think through your vision for the session without any pressure.
I’ve had clients book with me at 14 weeks and I love it every time. It tells me they’ve thought about this, they care about it, and they’re approaching it with intention.
There is no such thing as booking too early for a newborn session.
Specific Timing by Season: What to Know About Minnesota
Spring (March–May) Due Dates
Spring is a popular time for births, and Saint Paul newborn photographers typically see strong demand for sessions from March through May. If your baby is due in spring, I’d encourage booking by week 22 to 24 of your pregnancy to ensure the best availability.
Summer (June–August) Due Dates
Summer tends to have slightly more flexibility than fall, but availability still fills as due dates approach. Booking by 26 to 28 weeks is a comfortable window for summer due dates.
Fall (September–November) Due Dates
Fall is the busiest season for photography in Minnesota across the board. Family session demand is at its peak, which means newborn photographers are also managing fuller calendars. If your baby is due in fall, I strongly recommend booking by 20 weeks — and earlier if possible.
Winter (December–February) Due Dates
Winter tends to be slightly more flexible for newborn bookings, but early booking is still smart. The holiday period (late November through January) can create unusual patterns in availability. Booking by 24 to 26 weeks is a comfortable timeline for winter due dates.
The Bottom Line
The best time to book your newborn photographer is now — whatever point in your pregnancy you’re at.
If you’re in your second trimester, you’re in the ideal window. Reach out this week.
If you’re in your third trimester, reach out today. There may still be availability.
If you’re newly pregnant and reading this at 10 weeks feeling very organized — wonderful. You can absolutely reach out now. I’ll put you on my radar and we can make it official when you’re ready.
Newborn photography is one of the few things in the preparation for a new baby that is genuinely easier to handle earlier rather than later. The session itself happens after your baby is born. But the decision — the research, the booking, the peace of mind — that’s something you can take care of right now.
Do it during the second trimester. You’ll thank yourself in the delivery room.
If you’re pregnant and you’re thinking about newborn photos, now is the right time to reach out — regardless of how far along you are. Let’s get your session on the calendar so you have one less thing to think about when your baby arrives.
