There’s something magical about fall in Minnesota. The air turns crisp, leaves tumble into golden carpets, and families finally pull out cozy layers that look like they were made for photos. It’s the season when everything feels just a little more nostalgic, and that’s exactly why fall mini sessions are such a favorite.

But if you’ve never booked one before, you might be wondering — what exactly is a mini session, and how does it all work? Can 20 minutes really capture the story of your family? What should you wear? What if your toddler has other plans?

This guide is here to take out all the guesswork. By the end, you’ll know exactly what to expect on your session day — from the moment you arrive to the moment you receive your gallery. Think of it as your roadmap to a smooth, stress-free, and joy-filled photo experience.

What Is a Mini Session?

Mini sessions are shorter, simplified photo sessions designed to give you the essentials without the time or cost of a full session. They’re usually 15–20 minutes long, set on specific dates, and include a curated number of images.

They’re perfect if:

  • You want updated family portraits for holiday cards.

  • You’ve got little ones with short attention spans.

  • You’re craving a seasonal refresh without committing to a full shoot.

  • You’re trying out my studio for the first time.

A mini isn’t a “lesser” session — it’s a focused one. I plan carefully so that even in a short time, we capture the authentic connections and personality of your family.

Why Fall Minis Work So Well

Fall is tailor-made for mini sessions. Here’s why:

  • Natural beauty: Minnesota’s fall colors create a backdrop that doesn’t need props or extras.

  • Comfortable wardrobe: Layers, boots, and cozy knits work beautifully for photos and keep kids comfortable in the cooler air.

  • Golden light: Shorter days mean earlier golden hour — ideal for busy families who don’t want to keep kids up late.

  • Memory marker: Seasonal photos create a visual timeline of your family’s growth year after year.

Fall minis aren’t just about convenience; they’re about bottling up the feeling of autumn and turning it into heirlooms.

What Happens on Session Day

Here’s a look at how the day flows:

Before you arrive

  • You’ll receive a prep guide with wardrobe inspiration, directions, and timing reminders.

  • I recommend leaving a little early — fall weekends can mean extra traffic at popular locations.

Arrival & welcome (2–3 minutes)
I’ll greet you, check everyone’s comfort level, and do a quick once-over to make sure collars are straight and hair is tidy.

Warm-up shots (2–3 minutes)
These are easy, low-pressure moments to help kids (and adults!) relax. Think walking hand-in-hand or sharing a quick laugh.

Primary portraits (6–8 minutes)
This is the heart of the session. We’ll capture family groupings, siblings together, parents with kids, and individual portraits.

Playful candids (2–3 minutes)
Leaf tossing, twirling, or a little game of “squeeze hug.” These moments bring out real smiles and often become client favorites.

Wrap-up (1–2 minutes)
We’ll get a quick last shot, I’ll answer any final questions, and you’ll head out knowing exactly when to expect your gallery.

In less than 20 minutes, you’ll walk away with a collection of images that feel intentional, relaxed, and true to your family.

How to Prepare

Wardrobe

  • Start with a simple color palette: think neutrals, rust, mustard, olive, navy, cream.

  • Avoid overly busy patterns. Subtle textures (knits, denim, linen) photograph beautifully.

  • Shoes matter: boots or simple flats work best. Bring a backup pair if the ground is wet.

For toddlers & kids

  • Pack a small, quiet snack (nothing messy or colorful).

  • Bring a favorite toy or comfort item in case nerves hit.

  • Don’t stress about perfection — candid giggles often make the best photos.

For babies

  • Dress in cozy layers to keep them warm between shots.

  • Plan a quick feed before arrival if possible.

For pets

  • Bring a leash, treats, and a handler if you can.

  • A quick walk beforehand helps release energy.

Your mindset
Come ready to play and laugh. The more relaxed you are, the more your kids will mirror that energy.

What I Bring to Keep It Calm & Easy

Behind the camera, I’ve already set up light tests, cues, and a shot list that allows us to move smoothly. I bring tricks for engaging kids (silly noises, little prompts, games) and know how to pivot if attention spans start to wane.

My goal is simple: make this feel fun and easy, not staged or stiff.

Handling Hiccups

  • If kids melt down: I shift to movement-based shots or cuddles — these often become the most genuine photos.

  • If the weather turns: I’ll have a backup plan in place (reschedule or alternate location).

  • If you’re running late: We’ll make the most of the time remaining.

The key is flexibility. I never expect perfection; I expect real family moments.

After the Session

Once your mini is complete, here’s what to expect:

  • Gallery delivery: You’ll receive your online gallery within 2–3 weeks.

  • Number of images: Minis typically include a set number of fully edited images, with options to purchase more.

  • Prints & products: You can order wall art, albums, or holiday cards directly from your gallery.

  • Keepsakes: Your images are meant to live beyond the screen — think framed prints or calendars for grandparents.

FAQs

How many images will we get?
Each mini includes a set number of images (outlined when you book), with the option to purchase extras.

Can we change outfits?
Minis move quickly, so I recommend sticking with one outfit per family.

What happens if it rains?
We’ll either reschedule or move to a backup indoor location.

Can we bring grandparents or cousins?
Minis are designed for a single family unit. If you’d like extended family photos, a full session is a better fit.

When will we see our gallery?
Within 2–3 weeks after your session.

Closing Thoughts

Fall minis are about pressing pause on the busy season and savoring the little things: the way your child’s hand fits in yours, the shared laugh that makes you both scrunch your noses, the fleeting fall colors that only last a moment.

If you’re ready to capture your family’s story in this beautiful season, I’d love to welcome you into a mini session. Spots always go quickly, so the best way to save yours is to book early or join the waitlist for upcoming dates.
